BOOX Note Air5C Now DSA Approved

We are pleased to announce the addition of the BOOX Note Air5C to the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) equipment offering, expanding the range of inclusive assistive technology available to students and needs assessors. 

The newly listed colour e-paper device provides an alternative to traditional laptops and tablets for students who experience sensory, attentional, or cognitive barriers when using standard screen-based technology. Its inclusion reflects the growing recognition that a single type of device does not suit all learners, particularly those who benefit from low-stimulus study environments. 

Designed with focus and accessibility in mind, the BOOX Note Air5C features a 10.3-inch glare-free E Ink display that closely resembles paper. This significantly reduces visual stress and eye fatigue, making it particularly suitable for students who experience migraines, visual sensitivity, or sensory overload. For many users, the calmer screen experience supports longer periods of reading, note-taking, and academic engagement. 

The device is especially relevant for students whose disabilities impact concentration, organisation, information processing, reading stamina, or written output. It has proven benefits for students with ADHD, autistic spectrum conditions, and dyslexia, where traditional laptops or tablets may increase distraction or cognitive load rather than reduce it. As a DSA-supported option, the BOOX Note Air5C gives assessors an additional, flexible recommendation where high-stimulus technology may not be appropriate. 

In addition to its display, the BOOX Note Air5C supports multiple ways of capturing and working with information. Students can take handwritten notes using a stylus, convert handwriting into typed text, record audio or voice notes during lectures, and use text-to-speech to review academic materials. These features allow learning strategies to be tailored to individual needs, supporting students who struggle with typing speed, spelling, sustained attention, or note-taking under time pressure. 

Running on Android 15, the device is compatible with widely used academic software and platforms, including Microsoft 365, PDF annotation tools, and cloud storage services. When paired with a Bluetooth keyboard, it can also support longer written assignments, while maintaining a more distraction-reduced interface than conventional tablets or laptops. Its long battery life further supports students who may experience difficulties with planning, routines, or remembering to charge devices, reducing disruption during teaching or study sessions. 

By enabling students to store, organise, and annotate notes and reading materials in one place, the BOOX Note Air5C helps reduce reliance on paper and minimises the executive functioning demands associated with managing multiple notebooks or loose documents. This supports improved organisation, time management, and independent study skills across a range of academic settings. 

The BOOX Note Air5C enhances core academic tasks such as reading, writing, and structured note-taking, prioritising clarity, accessibility, and sustained focus. Its inclusion within the DSA framework provides assessors with a proportionate and appropriate technology option for students who require a lower-stimulus learning tool.
